On the May 12, 2009 episode of American Idol, 3 Finalists Compete, the final three singers sang two songs each. The first song was chosen by the judges, and the second song was chosen by the individual. Tomorrow the final two will be announced, and one week from tonight the winner will be crowned.
First Performance
Danny Gokey – Dance Little Sister, Terence Trent D’Arby (chosen by Paula) – This song showed off Danny’s jumpy side. He was very into the performance. Randy thought it was “dope.” Kara didn’t like the dancing, but Paula loved it. Simon said it was vocally good.
Kris Allen – Apologize, One Republic (chosen by Randy and Kara) – This was a great song for Kris because he was able to show off his vocals and his piano skills. Randy said it showed them who he could be in the music business. Kara didn’t think it was good enough for this stage. Paula said there was a bum note. Simon called Kara out for choosing the song and blaming Kris for it going wrong. An argument broke out, and we never really heard what Simon thought of the performance.
Adam Lambert – One, U2 (chosen by Simon) – The song was odd in the begging, but Adam eventually brought himself in to it. His high note was phenomenal. Randy didn’t really love Adam’s version. Kara was impressed with Adam’s version. Paula called Adam brilliant and said she was staring at the American Idol. Simon said if Adam isn’t in the finalist it will be one of the biggest upsets.
Second Performance
Danny – You Are So Beautiful, Joe Cocker – This was a really pretty arrangement. Randy said the vocals were amazing. Kara called the performance stunning. Paula said everyone was left breathless. Simon didn’t like the arrangement but loved the vocals.
Kris – Heartless, Kanye West – Kris pulled out his guitar for this performance, and he really made it his own. It was very different from the Kanye version. Randy said he liked Kris’ version better than Kanye’s version. Kara said it was bold and brave in a good way. Paula said performances like that keep him current. Simon loved it.
Adam – Cryin’, Aerosmith – This seemed like the perfect song for Adam, and the audience went wild for the performance. Randy said Adam is one of the best AI has had. Kara was so impressed with the high notes. Paula said they will definitely see Adam next week. Simon told everyone to vote for Adam because he deserves it.
