Betty Sees Don in a New Way in The Color Blue

Betty makes a shocking discovery about Don while he continues his dalliance with Miss Farrell. Meanwhile, Sterling Cooper marks 40 years and Paul competes with Peggy.

Snuggling in bed with Don Draper, Suzanne Farrell repeated a question she heard from a student: “How do I know if what I see is blue is the same as it is to you?” Don’s eventual response? “The truth is people may see things differently, but they don’t really want to.” Betty certainly saw her husband differently after stumbling upon his box of secrets — and she was quite unhappy with the view.

The Drapers’ Deceptions

Betty and Don continued to hide their respective affairs from each other, so both were suspicious when someone hung up the phone on an offended Sally. Betty called Henry Francis to ask if he had done it, but he insisted that he was “not playing a game.” Suzanne also denied making the call, but there seems to be an undercurrent of insanity beneath her innocence.

She defied Don’s efforts to keep their affair a secret, showing up on his train and insisting on introducing him to her brother when Don clearly would have preferred to disappear into the night. However, he took a shine to the Suzanne’s epileptic sibling, offering to drive him to a new job and allowing him to escape with some cash — perhaps an act of atonement for the way Don treated his own brother.

Betty Draper, Meet Dick Whitman

Meanwhile, Betty’s laundry day suddenly became more interesting when she found Don’s keys in the pocket of his robe. She wasted no time in opening his desk drawer, bypassing the stacks of cash for a box that contained pictures of the Whitman family, Don’s dog tags and records of his dealings with Anna Draper — including a divorce certificate.

Although it would be nearly impossible for Betty to piece together Don’s whole story from this evidence, she clearly has discovered that he is keeping a massive secret from her. She waited to confront him with the box until 2:15 a.m., but he never came home, and she locked the box back up in the drawer and went to bed.

When he called the next morning, she came close to confronting him again but backed off at the last moment, saying she was sick. Oblivious, Don told his wife to get better so he could “show (her) off” at Sterling Cooper’s 40th anniversary party. As she watched him accept an award to thunderous applause, the range of emotions on her face made it clear that their twice-delayed confrontation was coming.

Sterling Cooper for Sale

Both Roger Sterling and Bert Cooper expressed reluctance to attend the party, but they both showed up, although Cooper had to be convinced by Lane Pryce. The agency’s British boss was tasked with ensuring that the party was a success because Sterling Cooper is once again for sale. Pryce was dismayed by the news, but his New York-hating wife was thrilled at the prospect of returning to London — apparently unaware that Pryce might be bound for Bombay.

Paul Versus Peggy

After Peggy improved on one of Paul's ideas, he sniped at her and challenged her to come up with a better Western Union campaign than his. He dreamed up with a brilliant idea during a drunken brainstorming session but realized he failed to write it down when he tried to give it to Lois (who apparently didn’t get fired after cutting off a man’s foot) to type.

Peggy, however, managed to save the day. After pitching her own lame ideas, she encouraged Paul to tell a surprisingly sympathetic Don what had happened and turned the situation into a workable campaign. All Paul could do was stare at her in awe and murmur “My God.” Perhaps Miss Olson is more than just a skirt after all.
