AMC's Mad Men Season 3, Episode 3My Old Kentucky Home
While conflicts arise at parties thrown by Roger and Joan, Peggy and Sally break the rules.
Don Draper certainly looked like he fit in at Roger and Jane’s fancy garden party, but he seemed much more at home when he hopped over the bar to chat with another party ditcher. After all, this sophisticated ad man used to be a kid who parked wealthier people’s cars — and used them as toilets. Although Betty certainly drew a lot of attention, including that of a touchy-feely man from the governor’s office, Don was content to remain on the sidelines while Roger serenaded his new wife in blackface and Pete and Trudy tore up the dance floor, leaving Ken to lament the fact that he was dateless. Instead of putting their relationship on display, however, Don and Betty shared a private kiss under some trees at the end of the evening. Jane Versus JoanThe disdain that Don showed during Roger’s performance boiled over after a very drunk Jane revealed that she knew about Betty and Don’s separation. When Roger implied that Don was jealous because Roger was happy, Don spat, “No one thinks you’re happy. They think you’re foolish.” Whether or not Don is right, and whether or not Roger really loves Jane, he certainly seems to be a better husband to her than Greg is to Joan. Jane and Joan’s confrontation at the office was not the audience’s only chance to compare the two women. While Roger allowed himself to look ridiculous as he performed for Jane, Greg forced Joan to play the accordion and sing for his guests, showing her off. To make matters worse, Joan learned that her husband’s promotion to chief resident — and her ticket out of Sterling Cooper — is not a sure thing. ‘I Am So High’Meanwhile, Paul, Smitty and Peggy were stuck at the office for the weekend working on a campaign for Bacardi. A visit from Paul’s pot-dealing college buddy revealed that Paul is even more of a pompous jerk than he initially appears — although he does have a pretty decent singing voice. Despite his attempts to ostracize Peggy from the pot party, she refused to be left out: “I’m Peggy Olson and I want to smoke some marijuana.” When he tried to dissuade her, Peggy continued to stand up for herself: “How do you know what I’ll like? You never ask me about anything except brassieres and body odor and makeup.” While the men remained unproductive, Peggy managed to dream up a campaign, capture the attentions of Smitty and demonstrate her newfound assertiveness to her busybody secretary, Olive. Maybe the employees of Sterling Cooper should start including a joint with their daily regimen of alcohol. Sally StealsAt the Draper home, Sally decided to celebrate her newfound friendship with her grandpa by pinching $5 from his money clip. Although she almost let him blame Carla, Sally eventually threw the cash onto the kitchen floor and “found” it. Grandpa Gene seemed to know it was her, but he still let her read to him later in the evening. Perhaps they’ve found the attention that Betty won’t give them in each other.
