A brief synopsis of the pilot episode of Season 5 for Bones, a forensic anthropoligist and FBI look at cases involving human remains.
The BeginningBones Season 5 begins with a twist. At the end of season four, Special Agent Seeley Booth (portrayed by David Boreanaz, most well known for his role as Angel in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the spin-off Angel) goes into a coma following an emergency surgery to repair brain damage from a tumor. This episode begins with Bones (Forensic Anthropologist Brenner) who has just returned from a foreign trip, observing a Tarot Card reading by a psychic (played by Cyndi Lauper), a friend of Angela, one of the lab rats from the lab. The Tarot Card reading reveals things about the dream world that Booth was in while in his coma, making significant refrences to the last few episodes of Season 4 for a seamless tie-in. Then the story jumps to the office, where Booth is being interviewed by Sweets, the staff psychologist (played by John Francis Daley). It is now six weeks since Booth has woken from his coma, and he is anxious to return to work. Bones returns from her international trip and her conversation with Angela and the psychic and enters her office, throwing her coat over her desk and sitting down on Booth, who is laying on her sofa, waiting for her return. After a minute of greetings between Booth and Bones, Angela comes into Bones' office and announces that the psychic has revealed the location of a mass grave beneath the Trevuche Fountain. Booth is bored and eager to get back in the field, and Bones is skeptical about the psychic's vision of bodies under the fountain as psychic ability goes against all of her scientific training and background. A few minutes after getting to the fountain, Bones finds human remains under the fountain with the ground penetrating radar. The fountain and the ground beneath it is turned into a crime scene, and the remains are excavated. In total the remains of 12 humans are found beneath the fountain. Now it is up to the lab rats to identify the bodies and then determine the cause of death, hopefully bringing a killer to justice. While the crime scene is being evaluated, Booth goes back and forth with other members of the team and himself questioning his newly discovered romantic feelings and love towards Bones which manifested themselves during his coma and still hang on. The Twist The lab rats finish the facial reconstruction on the first fountain skull and it is a strikingly perfect match to the psychic from the beginning of the episode. When Booth and Bones confront the psychic with the photo of the first victim, she reveals that the remains are those of her sister. Which leads the lab rats to the discovery that the entire group under the fountain were all members of the Harbinger society, which was a secret group of people who were looking for a utopia away from the rest of the earth (a cult) that were murdered by the founder for money. Then Booth and Bones interview the doctor who was initially assigned to the Harbinger Society, because seeing the medical records of the initial members of the society would speed the process of identifying the remains of the other 11 corpses. Breaking back to the social aspect of the team, Sweets is sitting in Booth's office when Booth returns from his conversation with the doctor. Sweets confronts Booth about his feelings for Bones. Booth attempts to deny the depth of his feelings, and then Sweets proposes that the feelings are a physical side effect of the coma and therefore not real and a symptom that will fade over time. Back in the lab, they discover that one victim was killed by a spear gun and the other eleven died of anti-freeze poisoning. Bones takes off to confront the doctor assigned to the Harbinger. Meanwhile, Booth has a conversation with the psychic about his conversation with Sweets about his feelings for Bones. The psychic tells him to ignore the science and listen to his heart. Then abruptly she tells him to go save Bones because Bones is in grave danger. The Climax The scene flips to Bones confronting the doctor for the Harbingers and the doctor attacks her. Booth breaks through the door and kills the doctor in the nick of time, but not before the doctor stabs Bones in the arm. After killing the doctor, Booth cradles Bones in his arms and holds her until the paramedics arrive and separate them. When Booth and Bones find out that they don't have enough physical evidence to arrest the founder for the murders, they devise a plan to obtain the evidence. They entice the psychic to scratch the founder, and then use the DNA under her fingernails to compare to DNA that they found on a certificate from the society. While the founder is unable to be charged for murder, he is charged with grand theft auto, fraud, and a whole host of other charges with a combined sentence of over 100 years, effectively putting him away for life anyways. At the very end of the episode, Booth finally tells Bones how he feels about her, almost, and Bones blows it off and doesn't really see it for what it really means. Eventually, maybe, those two will end up together, but for now it is anyone's guess what will happen next episode.
