Bones Season 5 Episode 2

The Bond In The Boot Intro

Oct 25, 2009 Cecilia Johnson

A murder straight out of a James Bond movie leads Booth, Bones, and the gang to investigate a spy ring.

This episode begins with a James Bond style gentleman in a suit with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist being gunned down in a parking structure by another gentleman with a gun complete with a silencer. The gunman cuts the victim’s hand off with a pocket knife in order to get the briefcase. Then he hops into a sports car and starts to drive off. Except that the getaway car gets shot at and then runs over the corpse. The entire time, the James Bond theme plays in the background.

Bones and Booth Head to Crime Scene

When Bones and Booth are walking towards the scene, Bones shows off a Rolex that she was given by her publisher for the success of her book. Meanwhile Booth is arguing on his cell phone with a plumber who is trying to charge him a high amount to repair the plumbing in Booth’s house. Bones offers to pay for the plumber which does not sit well with Booth, especially since before the coma he had been capable of making the repairs himself.

Arriving at the crime scene the audience sees the remains of the victim being eaten by cats. There is a long discussion of the feral nature of cats while the critters are rounded up and their droppings collected as evidence. At autopsy it is revealed that the victim has an implant in his leg that was specifically Russian, and the discovery of a partial package of airline peanuts from a Russian airline further point to the ethnicity of the victim.

Mysterious Diamond Courier - National Security Threat?

While all of the forensic evidence is being gathered and the autopsy is being completed, a member of the State Department visits Booth in his office and informs the staff that the corpse that they are dealing with is no ordinary victim. In fact, he turns out to be a courier for a jewelry merchant overseas. But the level of interest by the State Department begins to call into question whether or not it was actually diamonds that were brought over in the stolen briefcase or if it contained something of a more sinister nature.

The diamond courier with diplomatic clearance is a mystery and is being treated as a national security threat because there is no way to determine the exact contents of the briefcase, and couriers are normally not ushered into the country thru the diplomatic checkpoint.

An interview with the victim’s jewelry boss reveals that the briefcase should have been carrying over $2 million in diamonds and other precious stones.

There is even more action, intrigue, and comedy in the rest of the episode.
