Lost's final season will feature the return of some original characters and favorites Boone Carlyle, Charlie Pace, and Claire Littleton, as well as a few new faces.

Can’t wait until 2010 to find out which characters will play a part in the final season of ABC’s cult show Lost? Then see below for the latest details about which characters will be coming or going.

Which Cast Members and Characters are Returning?

A number of fan favorites will be returning for the final season, either as series regulars or as guest stars.

  • Nestor Carbonell (the non-aging Richard Alpert) will be returning, this time as a series regular. Carbonell tells TV Guide he’ll be in 16 out of 18 episodes this season.
  • Elizabeth Mitchell (Dr. Juliet Burke) will also be returning, although not as a series regular. This means that Juliet may have survived the explosion that occurred at the end of the fifth season.
  • Jeremy Davies, who plays the deceased Daniel Faraday, will also make several appearances this season.
  • John Terry (Christian Shepherd) and Alan Hale (Charles Widmore) will also be back on a recurring basis. The Ausiello Files reports that producers have the right to pick up either actor as a series regular for the final season, although there have been no evidence of that happening.
  • Damen Lindelof told TV Guide in August 2009 that “[t]here's a good chance you'll be seeing many characters you haven't seen since the first season.” Among those returners is Ian Somerhalder who plays the deceased Boone Carlyle. Greg Grunberg, who currently stars as Matt Parkman on NBC’s Heroes, has been asked about briefly reprising his role of the Flight 815 pilot who was killed off in the show’s premiere episode.
  • Other former stars who will be returning are Dominic Monaghan (the deceased Charlie Pace) and Emilie de Ravin (Claire Littleton). After a large absence from the show last season, de Ravin will be returning as a series regular. Carlton Cuse told the Ausiello Files, “Damon and I are very excited to bring Claire back to the show, and even more excited for people to experience just how she will return.”

Who Won’t Be Returning?

Despite teasing for nearly three years that Libby’s story would be wrapped up by the series finale, Damon Lindelof told E! Online that Cynthia Waltros (Libby) wouldn’t be returning. Apparently, Waltros is busy with other projects and without her returning, it’s impossible for producers to complete her story arc.

Newcomers to the Series

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Deadwood alum John Hawkes and Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada are joining the show’s final season as recurring characters. Hawkes will portray a mysterious character named Lennon, described as “the scruffy, edgy and charismatic spokesperson and translator for the president of a foreign corporation who is far more powerful than it seems from his position.” Sanada will portray an as-of-yet unnamed character.
