The ritualistic killing of an immigrant prompts Richard Castle and Kate Beckett to investigate, although a worse foe may have arrived: Castle's ex-wife

This was a spooky fifth episode Castle. It began with the typically cryptic opening, where a bloody body is wrapped in a red flannel cloth as candles are lit and an anonymous character recites a chilling passage in an exotic language. From there, the story delved into the world of the occult, immigration and finally illegal trafficking.

Ritualistic Vodoo Killing

The unlikely pairing of Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) were called to a warehouse where they the discovery of an African-American man’s body had been found, beaten, bloodied and wrapped in a red flannel cloth.

Instantly, Castle recognised the signs as relating to Vodoo, and it was concluded that the man’s murder was a ritualistic killing. When another body is discovered, a female law firm employee murdered in the same fashion, it’s obvious there’s something much worse going on than mere ceremonial foul play.

Fake Bags Used to Traffic Drugs and Fake Passports

Castle and Beckett’s investigation would eventually lead them to an immigration building, where the residents lived in fear of their tenant, Charles Oni (Dohn Norwood), who also owned a market selling fake imitation bags. Oni admits to knowing about the murders, but he too is fearful of another person, the mysterious Azi (Aldis Hodge), a former child soldier and practiser of Vodoo.

This was a very gripping and taut episode of Castle which had a much stronger horror element involved. The story was wedded with reality, pertaining to strife in immigration and illegal trafficking, but there was an almost supernatural undertone, especially in the opening scene which could pass for an extract from the likes of Buffy or Angel.

Castle’s Ex-Wife Meredith Arrives

Amongst the investigation, a sub-plot storm was brewing. Castle’s first ex-wife and Alexis’ mother, Meredith (Darby Stanchfield), is introduced and she quickly announces her intentions. She wants to move back to New York after an unsuccessful stint in Los Angeles looking for acting roles.

Castle and Alexis are mortified by this, and it’s obvious why. Meredith removes Alexis from school under the pretence that a relative has died, which is a lie. She intrudes on Castle and Beckett’s investigation, although she does inadvertently have a hand in putting them on to the fake bag market somehow being related to the murders. She’s an annoying, immature character that is wonderfully portrayed and assures the comedy in the episode isn’t overwhelmed by the chilling nature of the investigation.

As expected, Beckett meets Meredith, and the slightest hint of tension appears between the pair. Meredith knows Beckett is Castle’s new muse, as she was once his, and knows what that leads to. However, Beckett was surprisingly unconcerned by Castle and his ex-wife possible getting back together. It’s inevitable her and Castle’s relationship will become less business, more bed-related someday, but, for now, she doesn’t seem at all interested.

Always Buy Retail Review

Overall, another excellent and often frightening episode of Castle. There’s the added bonus of a gunfight between Beckett, Castle and the menacing Azi, which culminates in Castle firing off a cork from a champagne bottle to distract the gunman!
