Damages on FX Network is an intriguing legal drama in the high stakes world of litigation starring Glenn Close as Patty Hewes and Rose Byrne as Ellen Parsons.

Damages, starring Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, is in its second season of the FX Network. The series is a drama/legal thriller about a high powered attorney named Patty Hewes (Glenn Close). The high stakes litigator hires Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) as a protégé.

Patty Hewes

Patty Hewes is a conniving, manipulative, Machiavellian character who always seems about a hundred steps in front of everybody else. Ellen Parsons is on a mission to take her down because she holds Hewes responsible for the death of her fiancé, as a result of a high stakes case against Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson). Parsons believes that Frobisher had her fiancé killed as a result of the two billion dollar settlement Patty Hewes procured for the employees that he had swindled.

It is also very possible that Patty Hewes tried to have Ellen Parsons killed. Parsons suspects that an attack on her was ordered by Patty Hewes.

Parsons goes back to work for Hewes at the prompting of the FBI, who is building a case against Hewes. Parsons acts as informant and gets Hewes to take a dummy case planted by the FBI, but their plans are ruined when a mystery man from Patty’s past, Daniel Purcell (William Hurt) storms back into her life and needs her help. His wife’s murder throws Patty into a vast government conspiracy.

Damages is often difficult to follow, requiring rapt attention to catch the subtle nuances of the dialogue and action. Adding to the confusion for the viewers are the occasional dream sequences.

While the drama is sometimes confusing, it is that very quality that holds attention. Damages is a drama that gives viewers a mental workout as they try to keep up with the intrigue and figure out just how bad back-stabbing Patty Hewes really is, in a world populated with bad guys and villains.

Damages is a legal thriller filled with intrigue and mystery. Much is left unspoken or communicated between the lines, keeping the viewer coming back for more.

Glenn Close is outstanding as chameleon like Patty Hewes, a dangerous woman if crossed. Rose Byrne is in danger of becoming like her mentor, as she becomes cynical and suspicious of everybody around her.
