In a season finale full of surprise, the ladies of Wisteria Lane offer unstoppable performances and unanswered questions.

Desperate Housewives delivers heart-stopping drama in their fourth season finale, which aired May 18th. Fans learn the secrets of the season, and heroes emerge. But just when the future of the characters seems secure, a five-year flash-forward leaves viewers in a deeper state of confusion than ever before.

Who is Dylan Mayfiled?

In a surprising turn of events, the ladies of the Lane discover that Dylan is not Katherine’s daughter. Or, should I say, that Dylan is not Katherine’s daughter. While Katherine’s sadistic husband, Wayne, holds Bree and Katherine hostage, she confesses that her daughter died when a bookshelf toppled over, crushing the child beneath it. Katherine and her aunt buried the real Dylan in the woods to protect Katherine from her husband, knowing he would accuse her of killing their daughter. The teenager everyone knows as Dylan is actually an orphan from Romania.

This revelation explains how Dylan does not remember Wisteria Lane, Julie, or her father. What isn’t clear is why she doesn't remember her childhood in the Romanian orphanage. Did Katherine brainwash Dylan? Did Dylan block out her life in Romania?

Hodgepodge

Orson is relentless in his quest to win back Bree’s heart. He silently follows her, rushing to her aid in desperate times. After a preacher makes inappropriate advances on Bree, Orson intercedes in an attempt to spare her name. It backfires when the church loudspeaker broadcasts the quarrel between the two men. He tries to protect her, and Bree does not take his actions for granted. However, she stands by her ultimatum that he must turn himself over to the police for hitting Mike with his car. Although she admits to still loving him, she cannot live with him unless he pays for his crimes.

Daddy’s Girl

The finale further cemented Kayla’s role as the evil stepdaughter. After reporting Lynette to the authorities for abuse, Kayla takes a step farther by burning her own arm with a curling iron. Lynette is arrested, and it appears that Kayla has won the battle. Finally, Tom decides to save his wife by tricking Kayla into a confession. She admits to falsely accusing Lynette, begging Tom to allow her to stay in the family. Tom tells her that he can’t trust her, and sends her to live with her grandparents. Both child and parent are obviously heartbroken when Kayla screams, “Daddy, I’m sorry,” as the car drives away.

Flash- Forward

After all lose ties were tied, Desperate Housewives delivered a cliffhanger ending, sure to leave fans salivating until next season. A flash-forward gave viewers a glimpse of what the ladies can expect five years from now. It opens to Bree, Katherine, Lynette, Gaby and Susan playing cards, a trademark of the show. One cast member is noticeably absent- Edie. Did her self-centered games lead to her excommunication?

In the flash-forward, we learn that Bree becomes a cookbook author. We also hear Orson’s voice calling to her from a bathtub, leaving fans to believe she allowed him to return home. Did she stick to her guns, after all?

Gabby looks slovenly with messy hair and old clothes, far from the glamorous model of the past. Fans learn that she is the mother of two wild children, who are as fond of expensive clothing and makeup as their mother is. The biggest surprise of the season was the kiss Susan shares with a previously unknown man named Ken, played by Gale Harold.

Due to the brief flash-forwards, viewers have more questions than ever. What happened to Mike? Why are Lynette’s children so bad, and will the writers continue where the flash-forward left off?
