Edie Falco, best known as Carmela in the HBO hit The Sopranos, is the star of the new Showtime series Nurse Jackie, which is a combination of comedy and drama.

Nurse Jackie, starring Edie Falco, premieres on Showtime Premium Cable on June 8, 2009. Actress Edie Falco is best known for her role as Carmela Soprano, the wife of mob boss Tony Soprano in the HBO hit “The Sopranos” In Nurse Jackie, Falco stars a nurse with a bad back and a drug habit, who works long hours in a hospital emergency room.

Edie Falco as Nurse Jackie

Nurse Jackie is a much different character from the Carmela Soprano character portrayed by Edie Falco. The nurse is irreverent and has her own sense of right and wrong. In her world, she sees forging donor ID cards as a good deed. She is not above taking out her own brand of vengeance on people that she sees as bad. The viewer may cheer her on as she deviously measures out justice in the hospital emergency room.

Edie Falco has cut her hair ultra short for the role of the curt but compassionate nurse. As the experienced ER nurse, Jackie sees doctor’s mistakes, early death and unfairness in life. She works 80 hour weeks and copes with the back pain and the pressure by taking pills.

Nurse Jackie Premiere

The first episode was balanced between tender moments, tragedy and some dark humor. The comedy in Nurse Jackie is sometimes sly, giving the viewer the sense of being in on the joke with the strong minded nurse.

In the first episode, a young doctor makes a fatal mistake when he refuses to order a test for a brain bleed that Nurse Jackie insists is needed. As a result the patient dies unnecessarily and Jackie is the one that has to comfort the family. The angry nurse confronts the doctor, telling him that she has seen hundreds of doctors like him who have no idea how to take care of a patient. The doctor grabs her breast, and then apologizes, saying he has a type of turrets that causes inappropriate touch when he gets nervous.

Nurse Jackie says “Make me good God, but not yet.” The nurse enjoys her earthly pleasures and vices too much to give them up for the sake of goodness. Amazingly, Jackie Peyton stays efficient while using pain killers and uppers to keep going and alert enough to work. Nurse Jackie is the female version of the Vicodin addicted Dr. House of the hit Fox series House.
