ABC Family's Greek offers laughs, drama and some spiffy acting from Scott M. Foster and Spencer Grammer.

The end of summer brings with it the return of ABC Family’s series, Greek, starring Scott M. Foster, Spencer Grammer and Jacob Zachar. Greek tells the story of students in the Greek (fraternity) system at fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University. Freshman Rusty Cartwright arrives at college determine to pledge a fraternity and shed his geeky-image. His older sister, Casey, belongs to one of the most popular sororities on campus and doesn’t even want to admit that her brother exists. The Cartwrights, along with an assortment of other characters navigate the challenges of college life through love triangles, mid-terms, and plenty of parties.

Green More than a Mindless Romp

The show’s name and subject matter may suggest that it’s merely a mindless teenage romp full of drinking and sex. And while it does have plenty of both, it’s a surprisingly intelligent and thoughtful take on college life. Despite a cast of characters that tend to wallow in their own shallow and stereotypical behavior, the show isn’t entirely lacking in depth. Past episodes have dealt with first time relationships and sex, choosing a life path, pressure from parents and heartbreak.

One ongoing subplot focuses on Calvin, a gay character, who is trying to find his place Greek system while still grappling with his sense of self. His accidental “outing” by a female friend causes quite a bit of concern in his fraternity. The realistic conclusion to this situation takes several episodes to resolve, but is done in a way that doesn’t feel contrived or overly convenient.

Scott M. Foster is Modern Day Peter Pan

Even the partying frat boy, Cappie (played with flourish by Scott M. Foster) shows a depth that is lacking in many other teen/college dramas. Cappie is a modern day Peter Pan who drinks heavily, flirts outrageously and scoffs at authority. But, just like Peter Pan, Cappie shows a sensitive wistfulness for something more. And, when needed, he is able to impart some intelligent counsel to his friends and brothers.

It’s true that Greek isn’t going to be the television show that revolutionizes the world. The characters engage in more than enough silly and shallow behavior. And, it’s important to note that Greek isn’t intended for young audiences. Greek is rated TV14, with warnings for dialogue (primarily sexual references) and language (crude humor). But, it has plenty of heart and emotion, and it’s a fun way to pass an evening.
