This is part one of two; Mark asks Lexie to move in with him, but she doesn't jump at the chance; George decides to go in to the Army

The Grey’s Anatomy episode Here’s to Future Days was the first part of the season’s May 14, 2009 two-hour finale.

Owen to Iraq

Owen told Cristina he was making progress in therapy. Cristina asked if he was going to see his mom, and he said he would eventually.

Charlie came in to have his leg checked. It has been bothering him, but Callie told him she couldn’t do anything to help via an operation. Charlie asked the doctors to cut it off, which Callie freaked out about, but he wanted to go back to war.

Owen told Cristina he doesn’t feel finished in Iraq, and he has decided to go back. She walked away from him and told him she would not support the decision.

Callie eventually decided to cut his leg off because Owen convinced her she was saving his life and giving him his passion back.

Owen finally visited his mother, and Cristina went with him.

George registered for the Army.

New Roommate, New Partner

Mark told Lexie he was buying a condo, and she said she would love to check it out. Later, he told her he wanted her to move in, and she freaked out. She said she didn’t want to get too serious before she was a resident. Mark didn’t ask Lexie to marry her, but he asked what she would say.

Richard showed Miranda the new high-tech surgery machine he bought. She was very excited, and he offered her the first test run.

Miranda got sucked in to doing solo surgeries without scars, but Arizona had a problem with Richard stealing Miranda.

Izzie’s Decision

Derek told Izzie and her doctor about a procedure he wants to try. She may lose her memory if it doesn’t work. While her doctors were fighting about it Izzie drifted off in to a world where she and Denny were talking on the beach.

Izzie didn’t know which option to chose, but Alex said he would support her no matter which option she chose. After seeing her charts, Cristina wasn’t so sure she wanted to cut, but Meredith thought it was imperative.

They tested Izzie’s surgery, but she couldn’t remember the memory cards or even Meredith’s name when they tried it. Derek still wanted to go ahead with the surgery.

After everyone left Meredith told Izzie what happened during the surgery and begged her not to do it. Izzie went to talk to her friend Allison, another cancer patient, who opted out of the surgery. She told her how the therapy worked for her.

Alex went with Derek and begged him to tell him what he would do. Derek said he would ask Meredith to have the surgery. When Alex found out Izzie wasn’t having the surgery, Alex freaked out and told her she will be having it.

Derek yelled at Meredith for telling Izzie not to have the surgery. He told her she crossed a line, but she explained that losing Izzie reminds her of losing her mother. Derek then forced her to go back to Izzie and tell her to have the surgery.

Allison was rushed in to surgery, and Cristina blamed the fact that she chose the therapy.

George was the one who finally convinced her she decided to have the surgery a long time ago by decided to fight her cancer.

Izzie told Derek she would only do the surgery if she could sign the Do Not Resistate form. Alex begged her to tear it up before she went in to surgery, but she told him she doesn’t want to live like this anymore.
