Law and Order Criminal Intent aired their season finale starring Vincent D'Onofrio as New York Detective Robert Goren in a show that may have been the most compelling episode of the series. The finale brought together the pieces of past episodes, along with characters from Goren's personal life in a fascinating criminal case study. Law and Order CI airs on USA Cable Network and on NBC. Spoiler alert. Following is a synopsis of the series finale

Law and Order Criminal Intent Season Seven Finale

The episode began when Goren found a picture at his mother's grave that led him to visit his estranged brother. When Goren arrived at his brother's apartment he found that his brother had been murdered.

As the episode unfolded, Goren's complicated family life was brought front and center, with references to the death of his schizophrenic mother, gambling and drug addict brother and a recently discovered nephew whose whereabouts were a mystery. To complicate matters further, the medical examiner revealed to the captain that Goren had a DNA test done on himself, suspecting his own father of being a serial murderer.

The evidence pointed to Goren as the real target of the violent crime against his brother and a former mentor. The chief suspect was Nicole, a beautiful sociopath with a grudge against Bobby from a prior case. When a box with a heart in it was delivered to Bobby, he was certain that it belonged to his nephew. Shockingly, the medical examiner determined the heart belonged to Nicole, the chief suspect.

Evidence started to point toward Goren as the real culprit. Captain Ross, who often had difficulty understanding the unorthodox detective, seemed ready to believe that Goren was guilty of killing his own brother and Nicole. Eames boldly came to her partner's defense, saying he was being gaslighted.

The drama came to a stunning conclusion in the interrogation room, where the complicated truth unraveled.. Even Goren was amazed at the revelations during the confession of a former mentor, an expert on serial killers. The mentor claimed that he had done what he had in order to free Bobby from people who were weighing him down.

Vincent D'Onofrio as Detective Robert Goren

Vincent D'Onofrio plays Detective Goren with intensity as the character delves into the creepy criminal mind. Goren's forte is to delve into the details often overlooked by others. Goren's specialty is the ability the enter the mind of the guilty and goad them into confessions during interrogation.

During the past seven seasons, D'Onofrio has portrayed an increasingly tortured man who seemed to be falling apart from the pressure. Goren's dysfunctional family weighs heavily on the brilliant detective.

Katheryn Erbe as Detective Alex Eames

Goren's senior partner is Detective Alex Eames, played by Katheryn Erbe. Eames is unique in her ability to understand and tolerate Goren's eccentric behavior. Sometimes it seems that Eames must have the patience of a saint, but she appreciates Goren's genius and keeps him on track. Eames followed her father's footsteps into the police department. She married a police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Eames looks feminine, but she is a tough, hard nosed detective.

Eric Bogosian as Captain Danny Ross

Captain Danny Ross, played by Eric Bogosian, often bumps heads with the detectives in his department, especially Robert Goren and Mike Logan. He took over the department from popular Captain James Deakins. Ross often doesn't know what to make of Goren. In the season finale, it seemed that Ross believed the worst of Goren, but Eames fought for her partner.

Law and Order Criminal Intent

Law and Order Criminal Intent is scheduled for an eighth season, which will begin airing in November. D'Onofrio and Erbe have been alternating weekly episodes with Chris Noth and his partner for the past three seasons. Noth filmed his last CI episode last week.
