Law & Order, the first series of the sucessful franchise, has returned to NBC for its 18th season. Dick Wolf's creation is a police procedural and courtroom drama.

Law & Order, the long running crime drama, has returned to NBC for season 18, with its season premiere airing on November 5. The brainchild of creator Dick Wolf, is prime time televisions' most successful brand. The series has two successful spin offs currently running: Special Victims Unit (SVU) and Criminal Intent. Series veterans Sam Waterson as District Attorney Jack McCoy and S. Epatha Merkerson as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren, have returned for the 18th season of Law and Order. Cast members this season include Linus Roache, Connie Rubirosa, Kevin Bernard and Jeremy Sisto.

The first half the weekly episode concentrates on the police who investigate crimes. The focus shifts in the second half of the show, as the prosecutor takes over and prosecutes the offenders.

Season 18 Premiere

The season premiere had an edgy, intense look, as the crime was particularly ugly. McCoy was determined to make an example out of a group of men who took the law into their own hands, tragically beating an innocent bystander to death. McCoy insisted that Cutter prosecute for terrorism, a charge that would send the men to prison for life.

Law & Order Shot in New York City

Law & Order is shot on location in New York City. Detectives investigate on the mean streets of the gritty city.

Law & Order continues to fascinate, with insights to the legal system and the convoluted dealing behind the scenes in a justice system that doesn't always work.

The series creators continue to find fascinating cases, often 'ripped from the headlines." The stories are frequently fictionalized versions of real life crimes and cases.

Character Development on Law and Order

Characters of Law and Order often have a mystique, as not much is revealed about their personal lives. Occasionally clues reveal a piece of their personal life.

The cast still seems relatively new and unfamiliar, even though there is only one new cast member this season; Detective Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson). Anderson replaced Jesse Martin, who left L&O after several seasons.

Last season, long time prosecutor, Jack McCoy, was bumped up to the District Attorney Chair. As a tenacious attorney, McCoy sometimes has trouble letting go of control of cases to new Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter (Linus Roache).

It ill be interesting to watch season 18 unfold. The character that shows that most change is Jack McCoy, a tough prosecutor who is now in a more political role in the New York legal system.
