Law & Order SVU returns for Season 10 on NBC. Detectives of the New York Police Special Victims Unit solve sex related crimes with intensity and passion.

Law & Order Special Victims Unit premiered the first episode of Season 10 on September 23, 2008. The Law and Order spin off created by Dick Wolf specializes in sex crimes investigated by an elite unit of detectives on the New York City Police Department. The season premiere solved a case, while reintroducing viewers to the cast and continuing story lines from the last season. Following is a partial summary, including plot spoilers.

Introducing New A.D.A. Kim Greylek

The episode opened with the introduction of the new A.D.A., Kim Greylek (Michaela McManus), replacing A.D,.A, Casey Novak (Diane Neal). Novak was fired at the end of Season 9 for being overzealous in prosecuting a case and overstepping legal boundaries. Greylek confidently introduced herself to the squad and got a chilly reception from the detectives.

SVU Investigates Child Abuse Report

The detectives were called when young boy goes out of control. While being questioned the boy accused his foster parents of abuse. In separate interviews, the foster father said that he wanted to adopt the boy, while the foster mother confided that the boy's behavior problems were more than she could handle.

Detective Stabler (Christopher Meloni) talked to the boy and learned that the foster mother takes him to a hotel where he takes his clothes off. Concerned, the detectives discovered that the boy was getting experimental drug treatments for ADHD.

A Pattern Rapist is Caught

Olivia was handed the boy's case file and was shocked to learn that he was the son of a rape victim that she had worked with previously. Olivia finds the birth mother, who had fallen apart after the rape and gave up her son.

While interviewing the boy, the detectives learned that he had been in the apartment during his mother's rape. She had said that he was not there, not wanting him involved. The boy gave them a clue that helped to uncover a pattern rapist, who had committed at least four rapes.

In a surprise ending, the pattern rapist was discovered to be the foster father, who had raped his own wife before they married. He had also raped the mother of the boy they had taken in, creating his own strange family. When the wife learned that she had married her own rapist, she kicked him in the groin.

Characters of SVU

Law and Order is a series in which character details are doled out in bits and pieces.

  • Last season, Elliott reconciled with his estranged wife, when she gave birth to their fourth child in a dramatic episode. His wife was not in this episode, but his rebellious teenage daughter showed her bratty side.
  • Fin, who threatened to leave the squad at the end of last season, decided to stay on a while.
  • Munch dreamed of opening a bar, like the one he owned in Baltimore. Munch asked Captain Cragen if he would like to partner to open a bar together. Cragen wryly replied that he would have to run it by his AA sponsors.
  • Olivia, who came very close to being raped herself, when undercover in a prison last season, closed the episode. She was in tears while telling a therapist that she was blaming herself and having trouble dealing with repercussions of the trauma.

Law and Order SVU continues to a be a tightly written series. Dialog moves rapidly, keeping the viewer absorbed in the storyline. SVU deals with the most repulsive and offensive of crimes. The detectives show their disgust with the dark nature of their work, showing that they are still human.
