Lost Season 5, Episode 15

Follow the Leader

May 9, 2009 Amanda Jacobs

In this episode, Lost's leaders took their followers down paths that could mean some major changes - or major disasters.

Ever since John Locke returned from the dead, something about him has seemed off, and that was never more apparent than it was in this episode. Suddenly, this former man of faith has become a skeptic, demanding that he and everyone else on the island see the mysterious Jacob before taking his orders. And why would the man who worships this island and everything about it want to kill its mysterious deity?

But how much of what Locke said was true — the audience saw him lie to Sun — and how much does he really know? Something told him to go to that spot in the jungle where Richard saved him, but was it really the island speaking to him? And does he really have as much control as he appears to?

Richard has been an “adviser” on the island for “a very long time,” and any regular Lost viewer knows that Ben is a master of deception. Are they really following Locke, or are they surreptitiously manipulating him? Do they know what will happen when they go to Jacob? And what will happen if Locke really kills him?

Jack Follows His ‘Destiny’

Jack has stepped in to fill the void left by the old John Locke, preaching about destiny and blind faith. He seems to have snapped, now driven by a mad desperation to do anything that could possibly change his fate — even something as crazy as detonating a hydrogen bomb. And Sayid and Eloise are following Jack because they have the same drive to alter their destinies.

Sayid wants to stop himself from becoming a self-loathing assassin, and Eloise wants to stop herself from killing her son. As for Richard, his motivations for helping Jack are murkier. Perhaps he is bound by his role as an adviser to do whatever the island’s designated “leader” tells him to — forcing him to follow Locke in 2007 and Eloise in 1977.

Three’s a Crowd for Sawyer, Juliet and Kate

But one person refused to follow Jack: Kate, who was heartbroken to find out that he would sacrifice their relationship to change time. So, she returned to the Dharma camp to reunite with the rest of her friends — and with Sawyer. She was already creating a strain on his relationship with Juliet before she came back, and her last-minute entrance on the sub just made things worse.

Indeed, Juliet had to watch as Sawyer took a beating rather than give up Kate to Radzinsky and his Dharma henchmen. It was only when Phil took a swing at Juliet that Sawyer agreed to cooperate, and the two of them headed for the sub, off to a blissful life as owners of Microsoft. But when Sawyer saw Kate again, he seemed to realize that he couldn’t leave the island and his friends behind.

Hurley seemed confident that his friend wouldn’t abandon them, and it’s likely that Saywer will return to team up with Hurley, Jin and Miles — and perhaps Dr. Chang — to avert a catastrophe while Jack and Locke attempt to create one in their respective time periods. Whatever happens, and however it changes time, it’s bound to be a monumental event — and a great season finale.
