Mad Men, the AMC television program about advertising executives in the early 1960's, has been nominated for a stunning 16 Emmy's in their second season on AMC Cable TV. Nominations include "Best Drama" and "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series." The 60th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards will air on ABC Television on September 21. Mad Men at Sterling Cooper Advertising AgencyDon Draper, is played by lead actor Jon Hamm. Don Draper is the alpha male of the Manhattan Advertising Agency, Sterling Cooper. Advertising is a competitive and high stress business. Don has to stay sharp, because it seems that everyone is after his powerful corner office. Work conditions in the early 1960's were a different environment, compared to today's standards. Sexual harassment is portrayed as commonplace, women wear pointed bras and executives smoke and drink alcohol in the boardroom. The series touches on attitudes about sex, abortion, pregnancy, drinking and smoking that seem prehistoric in contemporary times. Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency is filled with beautiful people, particularly the secretaries. Yes, it was an era where women were secretaries and men were executives. One of the most interesting story lines of the series is that of Peggy Olson, played by Elisabeth Moss, who breaks out of the secretarial pool to become a Junior Copywriter. Peggy Olson and Don Draper know secrets about each other that equalizes their relationship beyond that of employee and boss. Mad Men is a complicated dramatic series that tackles deep secrets, such as stolen identity, sexual affairs, blackmail and single pregnancy in the sixties.
