NCIS: Los Angeles Pilot Preview

The New NCIS Series on CBS

Sep 7, 2009 Francine Brokaw

NCIS: Los Angeles is a little different than the original NCIS series. Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J star in this new dramatic show.

This is a spin-off of the popular NCIS series which will begin its seventh season this fall. NCIS: Los Angeles will have some of the characters from the original series popping up from time to time.

NCIS: Los Angeles is about the Office of Special Projects (OSP) which is a division of NCIS. The OSP deals with dangerous criminals that pose a threat to the security of the country.

The Team of NCIS: Los Angeles

The agents are highly trained and their office is run by a no-nonsense woman, Hetty Lange (Helen Hunt), who is tough but deep down has a sensitive side. Finding it is not easy for the agents, however.

In the pilot episode titled “Identity,” Special Agent G Callen (Chris O’Donnell) returns to the job after recuperating from being shot. He has no where else to go, since he has no family. An orphan from his childhood, Callen does not even know what his first initial “G” stands for. He takes refuge in his job and even though he is not supposed to reside in the office headquarters, he sets himself up there. His character is like an onion. Through the episodes more layers will come off, but what they reveal is yet to be seen.

Callen’s partner, Special Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), is a former Navy SEAL who had been in Iraq and Afghanistan. His character is tough, astute, and down-to-business.

Other members of the team include Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Dominic Vail (Adam Jamal Craig), the newest and “greenest” member of the team. Green, in this sense, does not refer to the ecology. He is basically inexperienced at this job. Eric Beal (Barrett Foa) is their tech guru, and assisting the team is Psychologist Nate Getz (Peter Cambor) who has a way of profiling the targets as well as keeping tabs on the psychological conditions of the agents, whose work is dangerous and leads them into some dark places.

The Pilot Episode is Titled “Identity”

In the pilot episode, when a Naval Commander who had been kidnapped is found murdered, the team goes to work finding the murderer and unraveling the incident. They are under a tight deadline as they are about to take part in another operation to take down Mexican drug cartels. What they eventually discover about the murdered Naval Commander’s case is shocking.

Using high tech gadgets, state-of-the-art technology, satellites, and their own intelligence, this team is well equipped to handle the toughest jobs. And that is what they will get during the season.

NCIS is fine on its own without an extra spin-off. It's not appealing for every TV crime drama to try and imitate what CSI and Law & Order are doing. Maybe NCIS: Los Angeles will take off well but as a fan who watches NCIS on occasion, I do not plan on watching NCIS: Los Angeles too much. LL cool J? Are they kidding with this?
