Review of Burn Notice 2.5 Premiere Do No HarmJeffrey Donovan Stars as Burned Spy Stuck in Miami
Sly take on spy genre starring Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Weston, burned operative who is stuck in the toprical paradise of Miami returns with seven new episodes on USA.
USA Network's Burn Notice returns on January 22 with the first of seven new episodes. Burn Notice stars Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce Campbell, Gabrielle Anwar and Sharon Gless. Suite 101 got a chance to view an advance release of the episode Do No Harm, which opens the season with the explosion that ended the last episode. Do No HarmAs Michael Weston (Jeffrey Donovan) opens the door to his flat a bomb detonates and the door explodes outward, knocking Michael from the second floor and onto his car. Sidekick Sam (Bruce Campbell) came running and helps Michael as he gets up. As the episode titled Do No Harm opens, Michael is nearly killed, his brother is in jail and he is in rough shape emotionally; but when a man walks in front of a bus to commit suicide, Michael cannot resist the impulse to take on another client. Sam points out that he already he has plenty to do, but Michael feels compelled to take the client to help a sick child. Michael’s dysfunctional mother, Madeline (Sharon Gless), is recruited for babysitting duty, which she resentfully takes on with a dirty look at her son. Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) gets into the fun parts of the action as she relishes brandishing her gun. This episode of Burn Notice is grittier than seen in the past. The attempt on Michael’s life has shaken him up and he is off balance. The burned spy is off his game and not quite as suave as the viewer is used to experiencing. In his narrative the spy explains that spies never really get used to attempts to kill them. The blue skies of Miami serve as a vibrant backdrop to the gritty but witty and humorous storyline. Burn Notice is filmed in one of the most glamorous places in the world, but scenes often take place in less glamorous settings, such as in the waterfront warehouse district or in MIchael's ratty apartment. Burn Notice is a brightly colored serves, with reds, blues and whites creating a vivid picture of the beach and sidewalk cafes.
