Season four of Supernatural has the Winchesters trying to stave off the apocalypse. Given the show's history of cliffhanger endings, what can fans expect?
In season one of Supernatural, viewer are introduced to Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who happened to have been raised as hunters of all things evil. Their father missing, the boys go on a road trip across the country looking for him, saving lives and destroying said evil in the process. Surprisingly, the boys find their father, and the trio band together to hunt down the demon that killed the boys' mother. In the final episode, the Winchesters stop the demon's immediate plans, but fail to kill it, barely escaping with their lives. Injured, they flee, only to be stricken off the road by a demon-driven semi truck. The season ends with the Winchesters unconscious, bleeding heavily. Season Two of Supernatural starring Jensen Ackles Season two begins with the Winchester's father sacrificing his life to save his sons, taking all the efforts of the first season and making them essentially meaningless. The brothers hunt down the demon that has now taken the lives of both their parents, and in this finale finally kill him. However, fans are left with another cliffhanger: the demon succeeded in releasing part of his army from Hell, which will soon declare war on the Winchesters (and other hunters) for killing their leader. To top it all off, Dean has one year to live after sacrificing his soul to save his brother. Season Three of Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki Naturally, season three deals with the host of demons and Dean's seemingly final year before he's taken to Hell. One would assume that by the end, the heroes win. But due to the writer's strike cutting the season short (or possibly the cruelty of the writers) the third Finale sees Sam trying to help Dean save himself from his deal and new demon leader Lilith, only to be torn to shreds by invisible hell hounds. The episode ends with Dean in Hell, screaming for help. This Year's Season Four of Supernatural on The CW Network In the current season, Dean has been raised from hell by an angel in the hopes the he will assist them in stopping the apocalypse. Lilith, in an attempt to free Lucifer from Hell, begin committing acts that double as "seals" to Lucifer's prison, starting with the corruption of Dean's soul in Hell (torturing him to the point that he would torture others to save himself). As the season nears it's end, the Winchesters learn more about Lilith's plan, but come no closer to stopping her. The Supernatural Cliffhanger Formula If the show's writers stick to their current formula, fans will see a final confrontation, but not necessarily the one they're looking for. Tensions between the brothers will probably come to fruition, leading to the standard "we're angry but we still love each other" shouting match. One thing is for certain: viewers won't see the Winchesters walk away with a complete victory. Someone will die, or be seriously injured. The show must be set up for its fifth season, and so far that's been done by presenting a hazardous problem for the brothers. Don't expect to see any of them back in Hell (that idea was already used), but don't expect to see Lucifer and the Winchester's try to finish each other off. The Last Word on CW's Supernatural Season Four The season has been interesting so far, stretching the show to incompase angels as well as demons. Lucifer would be a great main antagonist, but whether or not such a thing can be pulled off is questionable. Fans can expect to either have Lucifer either free, almost free, or somehow involved with the show's Cliffhanger, but don't expect the final battle. After all, what does an evil hunter kill when evil personafied has been destroyed?
