The A&E show The Cleaner, starring Benjamin Bratt, returns for its second season on June 23, 2009. The season two premieres brings back real life story of extreme interventionist William Banks (Bratt), a recovering addict whose life’s work is to help people out of drug and alcohol addiction. Whoopi Goldberg and Gary Cole are guest stars in the season premiere.

The Cleaner Season Two Premiere

Banks was forced to move out of his home because of the tension with his wife, at the end of season one. His wife, Melissa (Amy Price – Francis) had to work through the resentment of Banks behavior during the years he spent on drugs. As season two opens, Melissa asked William to move back into the house while her parents are visiting to keep of a façade of happiness.

Whoopi Goldberg and Gary Cole Guest in Season Premiere

Whoopi Goldberg portrays Pauling Kmeck, William Bank’s former sponsor. She resurfaces in his life when Banks is called upon to help Davis (Gary Cole) a former friend and fellow former addict. Davis has a career as a high profile national news anchor and is also a spokesperson for recovery. As his wife (Jayne Brook) battles cancer, Davis struggles for sobriety. Kmeck (Goldberg) helps Banks with the intervention.

The Cleaner Extreme Addition Intervention

Banks is usually hired by a family member or friend of the addict to intervene. The intervention is not normally welcomed by the addict, who resists efforts to stop the madness.

The Cleaner boldly goes into the dark world of addiction as it explores the difficulty of gaining and maintaining sobriety. William Banks is an extreme interventionist who uses unorthodox means to help addicts dry out and to get them into a recovery program.

Benjamin Bratt portrays William Banks with dramatic intensity as he bears witness to the tragedy of addiction. The Cleaner is a dramatic show about an intensely complex and difficult subject.

The Cleaner is loosely based on the experiences of Warren Boyd, Co-Executive Producer, who has spent the last 20 years of his life as a councilor to clients. Boyd engaged a “whatever it takes” approach to help people kick their addictions.
