The Closer, the acclaimed dramatic detective series starring Kyra Sedgwick on TNT Network airs their summer finale in a heart pounding episode.

Time Bomb, the season four finale of The Closer aired this week, with an exciting episode that showed heart pounding action and drama. The Closer, on TNT Cable Network, stars Kyra Sedgwick as Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson of the Los Angeles Police Department. Season five of the highly rated series will air starting in January, 2009. Following is a synopsis of the season finale, which contains plot spoilers.

Episode 9, Tijuana Brass

In Episode 9, called Tijuana Brass, drastic changes were mandated for the Priority Homicide Division when a reporter accused LAPD of using the department to focus on crimes involving the rich and famous. Chief Pope (J.K. Simmons) declared that Priority Homicide was finished, but announced a new department call Major Case. Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson would retain her status and her staff, but the focus of the squad was destined to change.

Detective Sanchez took a central role in Tijuana Brass, when his brother was shot and killed by a gang member. Raymond Cruz, who is usually in the background, did a fine portrayal of a man holding it together, even though racked with grief. At the end of the episode the detective was sobbing in the arms of the crusty older Detective Lt. Provenza (G.W., Bailey).

Episode 10, Time Bomb

The finale episode of the season starts at crime scene, as Brenda was stuttering the new name of the squad, having difficulty with the change in department name. As the mystery of a young man's death unfolds, a sinister plot to blow people up is suspected. When a second young man is brought into the department for questioning, he takes a pill that causes him to implode.

Chief Pope is confident that the squad has foiled an attempt at a Columbine style massacre and prepares for a press conference. Brenda and her squad are not so sure that the case is closed, so they continue to investigate.

In the course of the investigation, the squad visits the shopping mall where propane tanks were purchased and proceeds to question employees in the hardware store. As Brenda looks at the mall directory, she recognizes the map as the mysterious symbol found on the dead suspects. She tells her boyfriend, FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney), that they were in the target, the shopping mall.

As Brenda shouts orders to the squad, the hardware store manager appears on the roof. His tactic is to scare people out of the building and shoot them down as they flee outdoors. The squad tries to keep the terrified mall customers inside, but they crash through the doors and get shot down by the gunman on the roof.

Brenda and members of the squad swarm up to the roof for a dramatic shootout. Detective Sanchez shields Lt. Provenza from gunfire and gets shot several times in the back.

The squad teams up to shoot the gunman, who is wearing body armor. He goes to a spot on the roof, apparently to get more ammunition. An explosion covers the roof with a thick cloud of smoke, causing the TV screen to go black.

In the final scenes, the squad is gathered around Detective Sanchez, who is gravely inured. The LAPD Helicopter picks up the injured Detective, who probably has a collapsed lung. Brenda rides along and holds the gasping man in her arms, ordering him to breath.
