Viewers left Bon Temps last season, with a dead body in the back of the sheriff's car, Tara living with some strange woman from Sam's past and Bill with Jessica.

The season two premiere of True Blood opened with Tara and Sookie screaming at the dead body in the back of the car, just outside of Merlotte's Bar. In the book series, the body turns out to be that of Lafayette, Tara's gay cousin who is a cook at the bar that they work at. However, just as Tara screams that it better not be her cousin, the camara pans away revealing it to be the pharmacy worker who scammed Tara and her mother out of large sums of money to perform exorcisms on them. Worse yet, as the sheriff reaches in to check for a pulse, it is clear the woman is beyond help - her heart has been cut out of her. Questions go unanswered for the entire episode on what happened to this woman.

Where's Lafayette?

Last season closed with Lafayette taking out the garbage and being attacked by some unseen force. Viewers were also led to believe it was his body in the back of the Sheriff's car because of this, however, Lafayette is still very much alive. Lafayette awakes changed to some sort of turn-style with a group of other men. He has no idea how long he has been there or who has taken him. He tells another man that often times he can hear screaming of other prisoners. During the final moments of the episode, it is revealed that it was Eric, the Vampire Sheriff of the Area Five, was the one who kidnapped all of these men for crimes against vampires. Lafayette, it is then assumed, being held captive for the murder of Eddie, the vampire that Jason and his girlfriend killed towards the end of last season.

Sookie and Bill

With Sookie preoccupied with yet another dead body to contend with, she also finds out that her Uncle Barlett, the man who tried to sexually abuse her as a child has been found dead. She inherits all of his money and promptly gives it away to her brother, wanting no part in it whatsoever. Afterward, she turns to Vampire Bill for comfort despite the fact that Sookie is rather mad at him for killing Jessica and turning her into a vampire to abide by his sentencing for killing a vampire last season. Jessica also finds out from Bill that Sookie was the reason that he killed the other vampire, Jessica then balmes Sookie for everything that happened to her. Sookie also uncovers that her Uncle Barlett did not just fall into the creek behind his home, but that Bill had pushed him as retribution for what Bartlett had done to her as a small child. Horrified, Sookie goes to leave, but Bill stops her and makes a speech to her about how much he loves her. The two kiss and disappear into their bedroom where they make up.

Jason

Still reeling from the death of his sociopath girlfriend, Jason turns to the Holy Ministry where he is quickly accepted as a member of the flock and offered a spot at a leadership conference in Texas as long as he can come up with the $1300 to do so. Once he gets the inheritance from Uncle Bartlett, Jason sees it as a sign from God and gets ready to make the move.

Sam and Maria

Through flashbacks, the viewer gets a clearer picture on what Sam's connection to Maria really is. Flashing on a seventeen-year-old Sam, viewers see Sam breaking into Maria's house to rob her since he has no money after being abandoned by his parents. Ultimately, Maria finds him and seduces him. Her unnatural powers come out during intercourse, and Sam flees with some of her money and jewels once she is preoccupied.

Back in present day Bon Temps, Sam brings Maria back the money he stole. The two talk briefly and Maria tells him her return and aid of Tara has absolutely nothing to do with him at all. The two walk out to the bar just in time to see Tara, Sam's on/off girlfriend from last season, kissing the other person that's staying with Maria. Shocked, Sam turns to Maria who only smiles.

Overall, the season two premiere answers as many questions as it created. The new season promises to be even more of a drama to follow, even without Rene's "fang-banger" killing spree. Eric, the Vampire Sheriff, is sure to raise all sorts of trouble for Bill, outside of what he has already done with Jessica and it seems Sookie's innocent view of the world will become more shaken as she gets drawn deeper into the realm of the undead and the heirarchy that prevades over it all. Previews from episodes to come hint at Lafayette becoming a vampire, Sam and Maria's relationship escalating and the real story behind the scam artist in the back seat of the cop car coming to light.

It seems, the sleepy town of Bon Temps has more than just its first real vampire in residence.
