Sheriff Mills suspects Richard or J.D. of killing Thomas Wellington; Henry and Abby dig up John Wakefield's grave

On the May 23, 2009 episode of Harper’s Island, Sploosh, the wedding guests were grieving from Thomas’s death, and everyone was terrified to stay on the island. Also, Cal got Chloe’s engagement ring back after he found it on a local woman’s finger, but he was forced to tell Chloe the truth.

Grief

Everyone saw Thomas’ death. Madison and Trish couldn’t take their eyes off of the sliced man. The sheriff pushed everyone outside but told them not to leave. He had to walk Katherine out.

Outside Abby received a phone call marked Unknown Caller. There was no voice, but Ava Maria was playing.

Sheriff Mills said he is convinced the person who killed Thomas also killed the reverend. He said the killer must have wanted Thomas dead because he knew where he would be standing.

Accusations

In private Henry told Abby he believed J.D. killed Thomas because earlier J.D. told Henry he had one more surprise for him.

J.D. wanted Abby to believe John Wakefield is still alive and is killing again. He begged her to go with him, and she reluctantly agreed. He took her deep in the woods and showed her that there were several dead bodies hanging from the trees. J.D. began to cut some of the ropes, and the pair discovered they were the bodies of some of the missing guests.

Abby ran to tell Henry what she had seen. He attacked J.D., who was with her, but she explained it couldn’t have been J.D. She took the boys to see her dad’s attic. There they found pictures of a man the sheriff believed was John Wakefield and fingerprints taken that summer that nearly matched the supposedly-deceased killer.

Sheriff Mills returned home, and the group confronted him about his obsession. He claimed he was just searching for a copycat. J.D. didn’t believe him and said he wanted to dig up the grave. The sheriff said no, blamed J.D. for Thomas’ murder and locked J.D. in a storage room.

Abby told Henry she needed to know if there was a body in the grave, so the two decided they would dig up the coffin. Sheriff Mills caught them before they hit the bottom, but he didn’t stop them. There was a skeleton in the coffin. Sheriff Mills told Abby and Henry he believes someone is pretending to be John Wakefield so their true motive will be kept a secret.

Richard’s Secrets

Sheriff Mills began to interview people about Thomas’ death. Richard told the sheriff he and Katherine had been having an affair for six weeks. He said he was getting back at Thomas, and he wanted to humiliate him. Richard said he did not kill Thomas, and he had spent the whole day with his daughter. Later Shea and Trish learned Richard had told Madison to lie to Sheriff Mills about what she had done that day.

Trish confronted Katherine about Richard’s lie. Katherine said she wasn’t with Richard that morning. Trish became very suspicious and went with Katherine to her interview with Sheriff Mills. In the interview Katherine told the sheriff that Richard had fantasized about and talked about Thomas dying so he could take over the company. She also showed him the newspapers she found in Richard’s briefcase the day before. There were several of them, and they were all about John Wakefield.

The last thing the audience saw before the episode ended was Richard talking on the phone to his attorney. Mid-conversation a spear went right through him, and he was pulled off to the side, probably to be hung.
