Will Sidelining Meredith Damage Grey's Anatomy?

Pregnant Ellen Pompeo Moved to the Background

Grey's Anatomy has a dynamic and well-rounded cast. But can they go without a big role for their star, Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo?

Because of the size of the cast and the volume of ongoing storylines, it’s common for even some of the biggest stars on Grey's Anatomcy to take a backseat. But it’s not common for the main character, the show’s namesake, to be moved from the foreground. But that's exactly what the writers are contending with now, as Ellen Pompeo is on pregnancy duty.

Dealing with Pompeo's Pregnancy

The writers have creatively worked around Ellen Pompeo’s pregnancy in their complex web of storytelling. Meredith reluctantly gave a portion of her liver to her father, not that he deserved it. He needed a transplant. Too much booze will do that to a guy. Now, she faces a lengthy recovery. But she’ll be doing it from a hospital bed at Seattle Grace, with her pregnant belly masked.

Stars Come and Go

Grey’s recently lost T.R. Knight, who played George O’Malley. One of the original five interns who starred in the show, Knight lasted through the end of season five before moving on. While a lot of stories revolved around O’Malley, particularly in the first three seasons, the show goes on without him, with that void quickly being filled. Other characters have fallen by the wayside as well, as others have come in for short- and long-term stints. The show goes on, and the bumps settle.

It will remain to be seen how much viewers miss having the Meredith Grey character front and center for every episode, until she is able to return to the camera, sans fetus. But already having her laid up in the hospital bed appears to be working for the drama. When Christina Yang, played by the brilliant Sandra Oh, needed a place to escape from her dark and twisty depression as her career stagnated, she found Meredith, her person, recovering from surgery in her hospital bed.

The Evolving Meredith Grey

And that last scene where Alex--distraught over Izzie leaving him--comes to Meredith’s room, is a stand-out scene. With Meredith confined to a bed after major surgery, she prompts Christina to go comfort Alex. The awkward reaction from Yang, who needs direction to hug someone, and the irreconcilable response from Alex is priceless.

It appears that Meredith Grey, that sad and damaged girl from season one, has grown up. She’s the person her peers come to when they’re in the dark place. That’s what makes following that character’s anatomy so much fun, even if we have to watch her on the sidelines.

I love Meredith Grey. And I love her front and center. I absolutely miss her since season 6 started. her scenes have been few, amazing but few. I am willing to take it because I do appreciate Ellen Pompeos hard work and long hours on the set, so for her to go and have her baby is something priceless and so wonderful that we should accept.

But now since Ellen is back on set, I want to see Meredith front and center all grown up leading the Seatle Grace group into victory over the Mercy West new comers and kicking them back out.

I do miss Meredith. terribly. Now I want her back. as the lead of the show. as the strong backbone she grew up into the past 5 seasons. It's time for her to shine.

Totally agree there. I enjoy the show a lot but I know for a fact it lost some viewers who decided to watch the Meredith scenes on youtube till Ellen returns full time. And I believe the number of those is not little. Also includes the MerDer fans.

If Ellen Pompeo is back on set now and ready, Shonda and Co should make sure to have Meredith in A LOT of scenes and I mean A LOT to gain back it's momentum and get those ratings back up.

She is the Grey in Grey's Anatomy, and like it or not it lacks so much when she's in fewer scenes. We need our heroin back as said before by others "front and center and leading" again.

The show was missing her major big time. She had some wonderful little scenes. but She always made everything make sense, made it all come together. I am not liking the Meredith less episodes we are seeing now. if I didn't know she was coming back and will be the lead again with most screen time, I wouldn't watch anymore. The story got all mixed up and messy without her. meredith held it all together. We need her back full time. As the lead with so much more screen time and big storylines.

Meredith Grey's story is truly inspiring. It makes you believe that your destiny belongs to your own. She didn't have a charmed childhood, but she made it through and look how far she has come along. Grey's Anatomy had the best rating when Meredith Grey was front and center (Season 1 and Season 2 anyone?). It's her character that has kept me watching this show until today and now Ellen Pompeo is back from maternity leave, they need to put her front and center again like Season 1 and 2.

Meredith is the only likable character left on the show. As for George, that void hasn't been filled at all for me or any of the numerous George fans out there. Maybe you should actually read what fans say. Every week, I keep reading comments about people hating the newbies and missing George.

The show hasn't gone on for me. Like many George fans, I don't even watch anymore since he left. And given the latest ratings, I'm not the only one who quit.

It's true. Ratings were sky high when meredith was front and center season 1 and 2 and most of 3. to watch her story and see how far she come is amazing. the writers have done amazing work with this character, they shouldn't just push her back now. the fans want more of her and want to see what's going to happen to her next. I would love to see Meredith the main attraction of Grey's again. would definately count me in as a regular viewer like past years.

You need to bring Meredith back as a centric character. with a major major centric storyline. I think it's a must to save the show.

I have never liked Ellen Pompeo and have NEVER understood why everyone thinks she is so great. She's really not that attractive as an actress, and her character, in my opinion, is always angry or whatever. I know that's the way it is written, but that skowl on her face is disgusting to me. I know looks aren't supposed to be an issue, but she is on TV! I just don't care for her.
